David Vaughan

David Vaughan is a parasitologist specialising in monogeneans (flukes). He has 12 years of experience working in South African public Aquaria, including uShaka and the Two Oceans Aquarium, his current home.

David has extensive experience in the identification and treatment of the marine parasites affecting the food and ornamental fish industries. He has discovered several new species of parasite and has pioneered quarantine and treatment procedures.

David's presentation will be on Whitespot and Velvet and will include his findings on some of the strains of these diseases found locally in Cape Town waters.

Niall Vine

Niall Vine is a professional food fish aquaculturist and works on the Espadon Marine kob farm, in East London.  During his time studying marine ornamentals at the Dept of Ichthyology & Fisheries Science at Rhodes University he developed a passion for breeding marine ornamental species and presented a lecture at IMACSA Durban on breeding clownfish.

His talk for IMACSA 2009 is titled “Biological filtration for the marine aquarist – lessons from the aquaculture industry" which hopes to provide accessible insight into one of the technical aspects of reef keeping.   The talk will draw on examples from industry and aims to provide aquarists with details on designing, constructing and maintaining their own filters.

Marcel Triessl

Marcel Triessl was born in Germany, is by trade a Master Plumber with his own business in Cape Town and a passionate Reefkeeper since 1995. In 1997,  he bred the Banggai Cardinal and in 2003, he built his dream 5.500 litre tank.

In 2006, Marcel moved to Cape Town and decided to continue with his hobby. In the beginning of 2009, he started a small clown fish hatchery from home. The first Amphiprion ocellaris offspring he raised were albino, the world's first albino marine fish. Because of the albino strain, he decided to breed various marine ornamental fish for his living. He has almost finished his new breeding room and wants to supply the world market with his Albino clowns. For the South African market he wants to breed all the different clown fish species. At a later stage, he plans to breed all the different dotty backs and a few ornamental shrimp species for the local market.

Dylan Bailey

Aquarium Curator at Bayworld, Port Elizabeth

Studied at NMMU (Formerly UPE), obtaining an MSc in Zoology in 2006. Currently a professional aquarist at Bayworld, with 10 years experience in life support systems and exhibit design and management, as well as the husbandry and management of marine mammals, fish, reptiles and invertebrates.

The presentation at IMACSA 2009 will focus on the benefits of using thermal mathematical models in managing energy usage in aquarium and aquaculture systems, from the average home tank to large scale aquarium systems. A couple of scenarios will be explored to demonstrate how thermal models can be used to determine the best methods for temperature control and energy management.
